Question
My husbands father was just diagnosed with colon cancer. A year ago his bowel burst and they took out a large mass that was pushing his organs out of place and it was cancerous. He survived the infection and all the complications of that and he has a bad heart as well. Well he now says that he can feel his liver and it really hurts. He dosen't want treatment because he thinks it will only prolong his life in a bad way. Is this true and if he has no treatment how long will he last?

Answer
If his cancer has spread to his liver - which is possible, even probable, but of which I without an examination can not be sure - his illness is not curable and the best chemo therapy can do would be to prolong the process and maybe relieve his primary symptoms at the cost of some sometimes severe side effects. Since his general health also seems to be bad it is most uncertain if chemo therapy would be possible at all. How long time this is going to take is impossible to say without knowing a lot more about him, but without any kind of treatment we are probably talking weeks or months rather than years.
