Colon Cancer/polyps

Question
Dr.,
I just underwent a sigmoidoscopy and the doctor found one small early stage polyp and took a sample for biopsy.
He explained the types of polyps to me but it kind of went in one ear and out the other.
Could you give explain this to me please?

Answer
Polyps are small, most often benign, tumours of the colon (in this case). However the bigger they are the greater the risk that they would turn into cancer. If yours is small the risk is small but a biopsy has anyway been taken and when the result is in we will know. Even so I do suggest that even if it is benign - which it probably is - your dr. should remove it completely with a new sigmoidoscopy so that it will not grow in the future. Good luck!
