Question
Hi Barbara!   When I was a kid around 1948 a cartoon was played during lunch hour at our school. These grouchy little gremlins would become happy when hit with a bottle of sunshine by the happy gremlins. The grouches would sing " we're happy when we're sad" and the happy gremlins would sing " sunshine...golden sunshine" That is about all I can give you. I would love to locate this cartoon. Thanks

Answer
Dear Bill, I've been searching for this title, but I'm sorry to say that I've had no luck so far.  As you may recall, there were a ton of cartoons made in the 1930s and 1940s, made by Warner Brothers (Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies), Disney, Hanna & Barbera, etc.

A keyword search on the Internet Movie Data Base did turn up two cartoons with gremlins in them, but I don't think they are waht you are referring to,  Both were war-related cartoons, with one from 1948 dealing with the Germans as if they were gremlins called "Russian Rhapsody" and the other an earlier film from 1943 that had Bugs Bunny dealing with gremlins on fighter planes called "Falling Hare."

Neither of these had the plotline you describe, nor did any other I looked at that was released around that time. So to find the title I'm going to need more detail--can you recall anything else about this cartoon?  Did it have any of the the "famous" cartoon characters in it of the time, or were these gremlins the stars?  Could they have been some other creature beseides gremlins?  Do you recall any other plot event?  I'm very sorry, but without more information, I doubt I can track it down.

Expertise

I am a professor of communication at a midwest university, who has expertise on subjects related to film. I can answer general questions on U.S. film comedy (especially satires of the 1960s and 1970s) and comic theory. I also could answer questions related to specific comic genres, such as comedian comedies, screwball comedies, "stupid" comedies, and so forth. The more specific you can make your question, the better (e.g. main plot details, main characters, possible character names, possible actors, how you viewed the show, etc.). I also need to have a release date (or range of dates, or at least the year you viewed the film). Please do not just provide a set of links to someplace else (e.g. imdb discussion threads). I am less able to answer questions about comedies from other countries, made-for-TV movies, and recent comic films and actors (although I would do my best to find out). I cannot answer questions about specific TV shows or series, "Our Gang" episodes, anime/magna or about film collectables. I generally cannot provide movie recommendations, since what I find funny others may not. Nor will I answer obvious homework (although I will point you to resources to help answer the question, if asked). I also can't help you find movie stars, or where to buy movie memorabilia, or tell you how to break into the business.
