Question
Hi! I have a 5 Felt Pennants Marvel Super-Heroes 1966. This package has never been opened. The characters include  :

Mighty Thor
Iron Man
Captain America
Sub-Mariner
Incredible Hulk

On the top of the package it shows all the characters and it states 5 felt pennants, marvel super-heroes, as seen on T-V. Marvel Company Group- Official Lincensee - R M S Sales CO. Livingston, NJ.

I have not been able to find anyone selling the complete set. I did find one person that was selling this but the package was opened and they only had 4 pennants and he sold it for 345.00.

Can you tell me if this is worth anything. I have pictures I can send too. Thank you!!

Answer
Hi Josephine -

Thanks for the great description!  I looked all over the Internet and couldn't find any information so I did a little experiment for you and here are my results.  Obviously this is not the gospel truth as far as value, as the merchandise is truly worth whatever you can get a customer to pay for it, but here's what I found out.

Over the last thirty years I have sold a number of comic books of great value to several comic stores both in my home town and in other major cities and I have developed what I call the Factor 3 Rule.  Basically this rule is that the comic, toy, game whatever you have is truly worth 3 times what the people in the comic store will offer you.

At one time I had a mint copy of Image Comics Spawn #1 which the Overstreet price guide said was worth around $60.00.  The comic store I sold it to bantered back and forth with me and finally we settled on a price of $20.00.

The next day I went into the store and the same issue was posted on their walls for a sale price of $60.00.  That would be a 300% profit on one item if someone actually walked in and bought the issue for that!

Over the last 30 years I've repeated that same experiment numerous times and thus came up with the Factor 3 Rule.

With that in mind I called seven local comic shops in my home town, and three each in two other major cities in the Southwest region of the United States and asked them what they would buy the pennants you describe for.

I got offers from $75.00 to $150.00.

Since yours are still in the package and are presumably thus in mint or near mint condition, I would use the high end of that estimate, and then apply the Factor of 3.

Using that logic I would estimate that the "true" value is worth around $450.00.

Again that is a guess based on a quick bit of market research, but, if the other individual you mentioned sold his for $345.00 then the estimate I provided seems right in line with that.

I hope that helps, I will continue to look through some of my text and computer resources to see if I can get you a more detailed estimate and let you know if I find anything.

Thanks for using the site and let me know if you have any other questions!

Expertise

I am an expert on the storylines of most DC and Marvel comics particularly the X-Men, Justice League and most Marvel comics of the 70's, 80's and early 90's. The characters with which I am the most familiar are Daredevil, Iron Man, Batman, and the Avengers. I am a rabid Green Lantern fan as well and would put that as one of my favorite things in life! One thing I won't do is estimate the value of a comic book, if that is what you need check out www.comicspriceguide.com

Experience

I have collected comic books for 36 years and have close relatives in the industry who helped shape the direction of comics in the early seventies.
