Question
Do Superman, Batman, and Spiderman believe in God?

Would Nagilum be strong enough to kill Superman as he did Ensign Haskell, or would Superman's physiology be too alien?

Answer
Hi John -

(I am guessing that by "God" you are referring to the supreme deity in the Christian faith, if that's wrong let me know.)

Superman has commented on numerous occasions that he does believe in God.  Batman on the other hand remains very guarded on the subject (like the detective he is).

One thing that may have persuaded both of them occurred when both were with the Justice League of America and welcomed a new member named Zauriel.

Zauriel was a 100,000 year old angel (honest to god, no pun intended) who was a member of the JLA for some time.  He first premiered in JLA #6 (June 19978) and he had powers similar to Superman, as well as wings, a devastating voice, telepathy, a healing factor and carried a flaming sword.  According to the comics he was actually an angel from heaven who had previously served God as a member of his Eagle Host of angels but he pleaded to be exiled to Earth to be united with his one true love.

He served with the JLA for a number of years and I gotta believe that being in the presence of an actual angel would be enough to make even the skeptical Batman believe in the existence of God.

I’m not the most extensive Spider-Man expert out there but I believe he was raised Catholic by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben and if that is true he probably has at least some grounding in that religion and affinity for its beliefs.

Given Nagilum's massive control over atoms, molecules, matter and energy I think he probably could kill Superman.  Even as tough as the Kryptonian is his component molecules would be vulnerable to attack by a being that could attack them below the cellular level.

Hope that helps

Expertise

I am an expert on the storylines of most DC and Marvel comics particularly the X-Men, Justice League and most Marvel comics of the 70's, 80's and early 90's. The characters with which I am the most familiar are Daredevil, Iron Man, Batman, and the Avengers. I am a rabid Green Lantern fan as well and would put that as one of my favorite things in life! One thing I won't do is estimate the value of a comic book, if that is what you need check out www.comicspriceguide.com

Experience

I have collected comic books for 36 years and have close relatives in the industry who helped shape the direction of comics in the early seventies.
