Question
I have a gi joe comic book, Vol. 1 #2 it has a 1 inch by 1 inch manufacturing defect on the cover.  I want to know how much is this book worth and will this defect lower or raise the price of this book.

Answer
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but, unfortunately, *any* defects (whether manufacturing or owner-caused) DECIMATE the value of a book.  I don't have the numbers, but if the book was valued in the Overstreet Official Comic Book Price Guide at $10, in the condition you mentioned it would get you maybe $0.10.

The condition of a comic is absolutely *critical* to it's value.  Pristine Mint is just as if it had rolled off the press the instant before, and this is the condition all collectors look for.  The more and greater the defect, the less the book is worth.  (Think of it in art terms - a painting is only valuable so long as it is not damaged.)

I'm sorry I couldn't be more positive about this, but this is simply the way things are.

Expertise

I'm mostly a DC/Marvel fan, but can answer a wide variety of questions on pretty much anything but romance and sword-and-sorcery comics. Ask away and find out if I have the answer. (Even if I don't, I can probably guide you to where you CAN find it!) ***PLEASE DO NOT ASK ME*** to give you a value on comics - that is only possible by direct physical evaluation of the individual issues.

Experience

I've been a collector for almost 35 years of mostly (but not entirely) super-hero titles, with occasional forays into other types of comics. I also personally know a few comics artists/writers, and am VERY experienced with Web Comics as well.
