Comic books (Comics)/Selling complete comic book collection
Expert: Chris Brown - 12/15/2010
QuestionHow do I sell this comic collection that ranges from the late 1930's to the late 1970's to someone serious enough to buy the whole collection. "Lots of Superman" I inherited this collection about 2 years ago and since have cataloged, photographed and graded them the best I could using the Overstreet guide for reference. There is over 1000 comics in this collection! I've had some contact with the usual suspects Heritage, Comic link etc. but can't seem to get to someone interested in buying. I have a link with pictures and a list of the entire collection that I can send to prospective buyers. If you or anybody you know is interested please contact me at the Email address this was received from. In the past 2 years I've gone from knowing absolutely nothing about comics to knowing more than I ever wanted to know. If you can help, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sandy
AnswerHi Sandra
Well 1000 comics is a pretty sizeable collection. I'm guessing you have learned in the past two years that while comics from the 30s, 40s and 50s can be quite valuable, most comics from the 70s aren't worth much of anything. Comics from the 60s fall somewhere in-between; if they are primarily DC comics, then 60s comics should be worth something if in solid condition but probably most issues would still only fall into the $2 to $10 range, retail. However, there are certainly many key issues from the early 60s and a few from the later 60s and the 70s that are worth quite a bit more, especially in in nice shape.
I do not receive your email address when you send me a question through AllExperts. If you want me to look over what you are offering, you will need to send me your email or the link to the website you refer to. As it is, I can only say that it sounds like you potentially have some valuable comics and probably also have a fair amount of comics with very little value (assuming there are a fair amount of 70s issues).
Some people will work out a deal with you to sell your stuff on eBay, so that's certainly an option. Of course, the trick is to find someone who isn't taking 50% of the hammer price for their services. Also, you wouldn't get paid until everything has been auctioned off, which could take a while with a 1000 comic collection. Heritage and Comic Link specialize in high-price, older comics and would be unlikely to want anything to do with lower value comics from the 60s and 70s. There are other companies that would certainly take the whole collection from you, as long as you accept that you may only get .10 or .15 cents each for some of the lower value comics. I don't know who else you have spoken to, but I can certainly provide recommendations if that seems like the best option.
Good luck, whatever you do.
Chris
