Comic books (Comics)/Information on Wolverine

Question
Hi there,

I am student at working on a design project in which we have to design a tool for Wolverine.  Right now we are in the research phase, and we have a few questions.  If you could answer any or all of them that would be amazing!

What is it about Wolverine that keeps the fans coming back?  Why do people relate with him?

Wolverine began appearing in comics during the 1970’s.  How does Wolverine’s character embody the social and political realities of that time period?

What are Wolverine's main motivations?

What do you think are his greatest strengths?

What are Wolverine's greatest weaknesses?

Has Wolverine ever used any tools or weapons besides his retractable claws?

Are there any other bits of information that you think we should know before we begin designing?

Thanks!  If you would like, I can email you the final project when we are done.

Answer
What is it about Wolverine that keeps the fans coming back?  Why do people relate with him?

Because of the underlying dichotomy in his character: he is gruff, aggressive, unapproachable and yet compassionate, heroic, thoughtful. Dichotomies attract reader attention.

Wolverine began appearing in comics during the 1970’s.  How does Wolverine’s character embody the social and political realities of that time period?

It was a period of disillusionment in America with certain naive political ideals shattered by Watergate etc. Wolverine caught the mood with his gruff cynicism and tendency to withdraw (even though he is Canadian!)

What are Wolverine's main motivations?

He has a huge absence in his soul through the loss of memories etc. This provides a dynamic inner motivation for everything that he does.

What do you think are his greatest strengths?

The absence in his soul generates sympathy in readers while providing the character with powerful motivation to accomplish apparently impossible deeds externally.

What are Wolverine's greatest weaknesses?

The same absences make him emotionally vulnerable. He will, if he perceives himself to be losing, engage the device of cynicism, which will distort his perception of the truth and tragically further increase his vulnerability. This is made more ironic by his 'mutant healing factor' which heals external wounds but does not address the underlying emotional pain suffered by the character.

Has Wolverine ever used any tools or weapons besides his retractable claws?

See the comics.

Are there any other bits of information that you think we should know before we begin designing?

No.

Good luck.

Collector since I was 8, never thrown any comic away in all that time (45 years!). Expertise in Marvel and DC superhero comics but also knowledgeable about a variety of independents as well. Know a lot about 1960s and 1970s stuff. NOT an expert on prices or relative commercial values -please don't ask what a comic is worth.
