Commercial Real Estate Investment/Start-up not-for-profit residential development

Question
Background: I am studying ways to start-up and fund a not-for-profit residential development company in a small town in Arizona, starting completely from scratch (no housing rehabs, all new structures). My target is to develop small multi-family housing units geared toward Social Security dependent elderly and physically disabled veterans.
Question: Where can I find grants or other free money for research and development of this plan and under what IRS codes would I apply for this type of not for profit status. Thank you.

Answer
Hello Martin;

Your question is a bit out of my expertise.  You have a very worthy cause and I am sure there  would be money available.  You may want to start with HUD to find out what programs they may have available.  Another step maybe your State's Tax credit agency it is where developers apply for tax credits to build housing units.

You may also want to contact Ephren Taylor look him up on line he does affordable housing in urban areas but he may be able to steer you in the right direction.

Please let me know how you make out with this project I have been toying with a concept that would most likely fit a similar model.

Please keep me posted I will help in anyway I can.

Wishing you all the best
