Communication Skills/Christian First Name Meaning.

Dear Phil‎

I would like to know whether Christian names for Men,Boys and Women, Girls have actual meanings.

For examples : John, Paul, Steve, Joel,Floyd,Michael, Andy, Gary, Scott, Clive, Martha, Jennifer, Susan, Margaret etc

if i am not wrong many Christian names for example Peter, Mark, Luke, Mathew etc are named after Saints which are mentioned in the Holy Bible - Old and New Testament.

The reason for my Query is Hindu Names - Both Men and Women have actual meanings. i.e. Prashant, Rajesh, Sunil, Suchita, Swati, Supriya etc are same Hindu names examples but they have actually got meanings. Many Hindu names are also named after Hindu Gods.

Awaiting your reply,

Thanks & Regards,
Prashant S Akerkar

Hello Prashant,

In times gone by, it was often traditional to give a child a Christian name that would honor a relative, such as the child's grandfather or grandmother. If they were very Christian, they would usually give the child a second or third name in honor of a saint, as you mentioned.

For example, my full name is Philippe Joseph Léonard Méthot.  The name Philippe was not associated with anyone, but individualized me.  The second name, Léonard, was the name of my mother's father. The name Joseph was the Christian offering, Joseph being the name of Jesus' father. My brother, for example has the same Joseph in his name as me, and his second name is in honor of my father's father.

For much of the western world now, first names are chosen with little meaning or association of meaning.  In fact, many children are given names of famous people, such as actors. The importance of tradition seems to have decreased considerably in the west, and opportunities for symbolic respect or even spiritual or mythical representations are not used to advantage.

Personally I favor the use of meaning in names, and you may be interested to know that my own three daughters were given first hindu names that not only have meanings, but also associate the three children to each other in order to give them a symbolic connection.

This is a great question, Prashant, and I hope that the answer is helpful.  Please rate the answer honestly.
