Question
I am very new in computer repair my problem is how to set up the jumper of drives and the effect he has on a computer.

Secondly i was working on a computer yesterday, and after booting, i had this message ' insert hard disk' while i had one install. what is the problem?

Answer
what type is your hard disk?
SATA or IDE?

You can identify the hard disk by reading on its label.

as for your second question, i will assume your computer is not recognizing your hard disk.

you still have to inform me your type of disk, but here is an overview of the jumper settings

in IDE connection, there are two ports on the motherboard, primary and secondary. each of these port can support two devices, master and secondary.

the harddisk and cdrome can be used interchangebly.
so i short a typical board can have

primary master
primary slave
secondary master
secondary slave.

you can not have 2 same type of levels of devices ie 2primary master, 2 primary slaves etc...

how do you set a device to be master or slave?
by using jumpers on the IDE devcice.

there are 3 options on using the jumpers

MA - master. if jumper is placed at this point  the device will be a master device

CS - cable sellect. the BIOS sytem will decide weather the device will be master or slave based on its position on the IDE cable

SL - Slave. the device will be a slave.

all this applies regardless the device is on the primary or secondary port.

its advised that the hard disk with the operating system be a 'primary master' ie jumper should be on master and through the IDE cable it be connected on the primary(sometimes called IDE1) port.

do get intouch and write a review pliz.

to avoid complications and if you only have one harddisk, just use CS with the jumpers on ALL devices
