Question
What would be the affect of using compost for filling in a 6" hole in my lawn.
I will then use 4" of top soil on top.
Will this  allow me to grow healthy grass on top with a compost filling.

I am a Fellow Michigander. This in MORE than enough to get what you need. You did not mention if you were getting Sod or Seed though. I will assume Seed. Make sure you buy a High Quality Seed Mixture. Look at the Seed Package, make sure it has at least 3 Different types of Hybrid Grass types. Don't EVER buy a Seed bag that contains 100% Bluegrass, Variety "Unknown" This is cheap Grass Seed, and you will be disappointed. Scotts, and Pennlawn, to name just 2, have a good Product, it's a little more expensive, but WELL worth it.
