Composting/Composting Duck Manure

Question
We have five Pekin Ducks right now as pets outside.  We use straw for their bedding and I'm wondering if I can put the straw (with manure) right on our gardens?
I know that duck manure is a hot manure but mixed with the straw, would it still burn the roots?
Also, how would I compost this manure properly so I can use it if not directly?
Another question, if you please, is how long would it take a foot thick layer of straw (mixed with our ducks' manure and all of our rabbits' "doings" over a space of 30' x 30' in the full sun?
Thanks for responding,
Paula

Answer
Hello Paula

All Manurers should be Composted before you use them in the Garden. You can burn the roots with any Manure if it is fresh.

Fall Leaves mixed in with the Manure Bedding, covered with a 1/2 of Soil will do the trick. Let it stand for about a week, see if you sense heat if you turn it over, that means its working, turn it about every week, and it will compost.

How long this will take depends on a few factors, moisture added to the pile, but do not soak it, the smaller the matter is before it goes in will be the Key as to how long it all takes. Just remember to add some soil to the mix, this is the "Spark" that Ignites the whole process. Layer everything about 4" with 1/2" of Soil between each layer.

I cannot tell you exactly how long this will all take, but 6 weeks seems reasonable, if you are doing everything correctly.
