Composting/Shredding

Question
Hi,
I have recently purchased a shredder as I have Privet and Lawsonia hedges. Can I use the shredded cuttings as a mulch or should I compost them?
Dennis

Answer
Hello Dennis

Yes you can use them.

Remember this though, as the matter decomposes, it needs Nitrogen to complete the process. This may or may not pose a problem wherever you spread the mulch. The decomposing matter will take Nitrogen where it can get it, that means right from the soil, which could cause a Nitrogen Deficiency.

So with that in mind, you could either let the matter compost on the side, and add Organic Fertilizer, or use it right away, and add Organic Fertilizer in the soil.

This should avert any Nitrogen Deficiency problems that should arise.

The best of luck
