Question
My partner and her soon to be ex husband are going through a nasty custody battle in Florida.  While in court, he presented a screen shot of himself in her yahoo e-mail account.  We know it was his computer because the tabs that were on the screen shot were for his business.  We know it was her email because it had her name on the top welcoming her to her emails.  The screen shot was of nothing incriminating but it was still presented as evidence.  We took the screen shot to our local Miami Dade police department and they took a report but didn't take it seriously.  We know it's a crime but cannot find anyone that will take it seriously.  He has a history of domestic violence and we would like to add this as well so that we can protect ourselves when everything is said and done.  Thank you very much for your time!

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

If you have already reported this to the police and they are not being very helpful, call the supervisor of the person assigned to investigate the crime. Has it been assigned to a detective yet? If not find out why. If it has, find out who it has been assigned to and call them and ask about it and voice your concerns.

If it has been assigned and you feel your not getting any help, you have the right to ask to speak to that persons supervisor. ask them why your not being helped. This should be an easy case for them and I would think they would jump at it.

If you still get no help ask to speak to that persons supervisor and so on. You will get results that way eventually. Sorry you have to go through that. Not all departments are well trained yet in this field, but they are getting better. It may be that your case just has not gotten worked on yet, I don't know.

If you still don't get any help, call the local State Attorney office and ask to speak to someone about your case.

A last resort kind of thing would be for you to contact the departments internal affairs department and file a complaint for the lack of help. But I would pursue the other avenues first.

Hope that helps. By the way in case you need it, the person violated Florida State Statute 815.06.

Be safe and stay well...
