Computer Science/Sleep mode

I've got a Toshiba computer with Windows 7. Usually when it goes into sleep mode, I can just jostle the mouse or bump the desk and it will come out of it, but today, it stayed in sleep mode and did not come out of it until I unplugged it and let the battery run it (it no longer charges). Can you tell me what happened and what I can do to stop it from happening?

Computer Type:  Toshiba ? Laptop?  Model?
System goes into sleep mode first time, easy to wake up: Now stays in sleep mode and will not come out of it until reboot.

1. Does the Power indicator light change?

System Reset:

Turn off computer. Remove all attachments and battery. Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.  Attach Power and insert battery.  Start computer and tap F2 at the Toshiba splash screen to get in BIOS.  Press F9 to reset system defaults.  Press F10 to Exit saving changes. Select Yes to complete process.  The computer will restart.

Let me know if this fixes it.
