Computer Security & Viruses/Several viruses and worms...

Question
I have the full home avast scanner and it keeps putting them into the chest but I'm still having problems. Every time I turn on the computer I have the scanner popping up with the same ones found. I had another user side to this computer and it is completely locked up (I go in and my computer freezes up) My email is also locked up. Even on this side I can't access it (I gave a friends email for the reply). I will list the different viruses and I'd appreciate any help even if you could tell me where to go to find out ow to clean them out. (My husband is ready to wipe the hard drive and I really would like to avoid that)
Win32:trojan-gen (other)
win32:spyware-gen (trj)
win32:autoIt-AC[wrm]
vbs:malware-gen
I have quite a few copies of each in this chest and avast has yet to tell me what to do. Thank you!

Answer
Hi Cyndi,

Even though you have AVAST installed, using Internet Explorer, go to:

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym

Click the GO button, then under Virus Detection, click Start. You might be told that you need to download and install ActiveX Controls for the scan to work, answer Yes.

Write down exactly anything it finds, then go to: http://www.symantec.com/search/  and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for removing manually. Make sure that you follow the instructions for removal, step by step, especially the part regarding disabling System Restore.

Hope this helps!

This happens to be of interest to me as it boggles my mind that people have nothing better to do than to write a virus. Wish these people, the ones who write viruses would put the knowledge to good use instead. My job as a local tech involves removing viruses and/or spyware.
