Computer Security & Viruses/False spyware alerts and desktop and taskbar problems
Expert: Brian Benosky - 10/30/2008
QuestionQUESTION: Hi Brian,
Since deleting and rebooting my copy of Kaspersky I have had a number of pop ups on my desktop telling me that my computer is infected with spyware and I have spyware problems.
My desktop background is now white with a blue triangle and an exclamation mark in the middle and a prompt to restore Active Desktop. When browsing on the internet a website pop up will go to some bogus Anti Virus software.
I can also no longer access my taskbar.
Once this problem is solved I am going to ditch Kaspersky and try something else.
Sorry for bothering you again. Please find my hijackthis log below.
Kind Regards,
Rob Perrin

ANSWER: Hi Robert
Not a bother at all. That's what I'm here for. Let's start by running a Malwarebytes scan, preferably in Safe Mode. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop from here:
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
o Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
* then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Do not run a scan yet.
Restart the computer in Safe Mode by continuously tapping the F8 key on boot until a black screen with a menu appears. Choose to Start Windows in Safe Mode. Log on as usual. Open Malwarebytes and run a Full Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Save that log and reboot normally. Copy the log in a follow-up here along with a new HJT log.

QUESTION: Hi Brian,
I am getting back to you from my work computer because for some reason I can only access websites using ip addresses as I keep on getting a message saying no Internet connection for quite a few websites.
I will run a Malwarebytes full scan this evening and send it to you to check over.
Before asking my original question I ran Combofix in safe mode which resolved my white desktop and gave me access to my taskbar again.
The web surfing url problem is new and I have read that this can sometimes happen after removing spyware.
Thanks,
Rob
ANSWER: Hi Robert
Just checking to see if you were able to run the scans. If so, send me the HJT log to check over. Thanks.

QUESTION: Hi Brian,
My laptop - ACER Aspire 3634 WLMI keyboard and touchpad have been having problems. When I touch any key the cursor freezes and I can't do anything. I have checked my drivers and believe that one of my spyware programs or Combofix has deleted the driver for my keyboard.
I have spoke to Acer this morning and they have recommended
a full system recovery on my laptop which would take it back to factory settings.
The keyboard problem has made it impossible to get on the internet and I have deleted my O2 wireless connection and attempted to reinstall it to fix the ip problem (I could only access websites with ip address). The problem is now that when I come to use the keyboard to confirm my details in the 02 registration the keyboard freezes and mouse cursor is also frozen.
Please see below the recommendation from Acer to reboot to factory settings - It may be my only hope.
Ahhh these things are sent to try us.
Thanks for getting back to me (see Acer message below).
Hello, Thank you for contacting Acer.
Regarding your enquiry,
It sounds like it may be advisable to perform a system recovery on your machine to rule out that the problem is a software related one. In order to do so, you will need to launch the Disk2Disk recovery feature (which should be supported by your machine). This can be initiated by pressing ALT + F10 when the computer is first switched on. You will need to hold down ALT as soon as the Acer splash screen appears, and repeatedly press F10. The window of opportunity is very small, so this may take a few attempts. The Disk2Disk recovery feature allows you to recover the system without recovery CDs. This will return your system to factory settings and will delete everything stored on the machine. If possible we strongly advise backing up anything important on your machine before starting the recovery process.
If you are unable to complete the recovery process, please do not hesitate to contact us again, as there may be another problem with the machine.
Regards
Acer Technical Support Team
AnswerHi Robert
Sorry to hear about your laptop nightmare. It sounds like the malware corrupted the Windows system files. When the scans deleted the malware, it took along the system files as well. I would have suggested running sfc /scannow or chkdsk from a command line, which should not be affected by the freezing. For any manufacturer, it's easiest to tell people to start from scratch than to troubleshoot. Regardless, let me know how you make out.
