Computer Security & Viruses/File Security
Expert: James Filmer - 12/5/2008
QuestionHi James
I'd appreciate your thoughts and recommendations about securing some files on my laptop from physical or online theft. I use a Dell Latitude 820, an Actiontec modem (WEP) with firewall from Verizon, two external hard drives (one at home and one in a safe deposit box) for backup, XP with firewall on, and Bitdefender antivirus. Somewhat regularly I also use Adaware, Superantispyware, etc. My concern is for 20 to perhaps 50 Excel data files containing my research--I wouldn't want them stolen or viewed. I backup with Acronis v.10, but the only security I use is my password when opening the computer. Should I just password protect the individual files, maybe learn how to use XP's
encryption function, go all out with something like TrueCrypt? Should I protect just these data files, the whole My Documents folder, or the entire computer? Of course I want to apply the same protection to the external drives too. And finally if you would comment on more secure passwords--though I'm like many people, my brain is already
password overloaded.
Thank you,
Cort
AnswerHi Cort!
As many layers of security you can effectively manage, in concert with your other critically important priorities, is the best way to go. Also consider utilizing an online data storage backup service (several reputable companies).
If you feel there's a chance someone would want (and has the ability) to figure out your most important password(s) and steal your data, encrypting all or some files would be a wise move.
But only you, and those you trust in private, should have detailed info about your security threats and loss of data risks. In other words, without more info (private), can't determine if existing configuration is enough.
However, based on the info you've provided, sounds like you've done a fine job, hardware and Windows firewall, a reputable anti-virus program, good backup/storage, with good security update habits and several anti-spyware programs.
For more info about creating and managing strong passwords, Microsoft has a excellent page about that subject. I mention that on my site as well.
