QUESTION: Hello Brian!
i use AVG 8 free and Malwarebytes along with Spybot S&D and have noticed something weird. (i am running XP ServPK3) Nothing shows up on any scanner except Spybot and the entry is MyWebMysearch or FunWeb. it is labeled as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) and has 2 entries. i can only delete one of them and it asks to run on re-boot to remove the last, which just produces a cycle of "...file may be in memory, may we run SB on next start-up..." i tried to remove it in safe mode and one entry shows up but also produces cyclical attempts. i tried to find it in program files and cannot or anywhere on the C: drive for that matter. i managed to find it in the search feature but it is a RAR archive and is located in Spybot's recovery folder. i deleted it from there also with no luck. I think its just spyware and i have no personal info on this PC (bank info or PayPal) only e-mail and such so i am not really worried. I use firefox not explorer and am running all updates available. I tried to DL a torrent and my PC closed everything and re-started so i am fearing some remote hacking. what should i do?

ANSWER: Hi Roger

Let's have a look at an HJT log to see if any malware is showing up.  Please download HijackThis to your desktop from here:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe
Make sure you close EVERY open window and ALL browser windows. The only thing that should be open is the HijackThis program.
Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Install" button.
Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
Should it not open, go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe
Choose 'Do a system scan and save a log file'.
Copy the text file which opens in Notepad and paste it into your follow-up.
   * Do not fix any entries in HijackThis, as they may be harmless.

ANSWER: Hi Roger

My apologies for not responding.  I have been backlogged and with Christmas upon us, have not had the time to spend here.  Let's try running a Malwarebytes scan, preferably in Safe Mode.  Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop from here:

http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
o Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
* then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.  Do not run a scan yet.

Restart the computer in Safe Mode by continuously tapping the F8 key on boot until a black screen with a menu appears.  Choose to Start Windows in Safe Mode.  Log on as usual.  Open Malwarebytes and run a Full Scan.

* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.  Save that log and reboot normally.
* Post me that log and a new HJT log.

This MB scan took about 2 hrs, usually only 70+ minutes. is that weird? anyway, hope it helps. i understand your reply being late, its Christmas!! i just wondered if u received it okay. well, look forward to hearing from u soon, its okay if it takes some time, at least i know u will try.

Two hours is not unusual.  Even twice that would not be considered long for drives with a great deal of files.  Let's finish cleaning the HJT log, then see where we stand.  Open HJT and run a Scan Only.  Place a check mark in the box next to the following items, close all open browser windows, then click the Fix Checked button:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {0579B4B6-0293-4d73-B02D-5EBB0BA0F0A2} - C:\Program Files\AskSBar\SrchAstt\1.bin\A2SRCHAS.DLL
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZRfox000

After fixing, close HJT and reboot.  Send me a fresh HJT log file, and let me know if MyWeb and FunWeb is still showing up.
