Expert: Brian Benosky - 2/10/2008

Question
I have a file called "malcrush" that is installed on the computer.  I uninstalled it but it still shows a "virus" warning logo in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.  Where the volume and battery life indicator is.  How do I get rid of that?  I pasted the Hijack log below.  Any help is dearly appreciated.  Thanks-Mike

Hi Mike

Unfortunately, uninstalling won't get rid of this pest.  Please follow the instructions below:

Download SmitFraudFix to your desktop from here:

Next, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following:

  1. Restart your computer
  2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
  5. When you are at the logon prompt, log in as the same user which you had done the previous steps.

Using windows explorer, delete the following files and folders (Don't worry if you can't locate one or more of them):

C:\Program Files\MalwareCrush\
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wupeng.exe
C:\Windows\System32\e404d.dll

Now, double-click on the SmitFraudfix icon and press any key on your keyboard to get to the next screen.  Press the number 2 on your keyboard and the press the enter key to choose the option Clean (safe mode recommended).  After the cleanup is finished, you will be presented with an option asking "Do you want to clean the registry? (y/n)". Press the Y button on your keyboard and then press the enter key.  The computer will now reboot and produce a log file located at  C:\rapport.txt.

Open Internet Explorer and run a scan here:

Once the scan has completed, please post me the SmitFraudFix log at C:\rapport.txt and a fresh HJT log and give me an update on how the computer is running.
