Computer Security & Viruses/Malware infection - can you help?
Expert: Brian Benosky - 2/15/2008
QuestionHi!
I've never had a real virus/malware problem before (I am a careful and - so I thought - responsible web user) , however I have one now...
Every minute or so, firefox (my default browser) will open and go to www.limewireextreme.com/whatever, displaying pseudo search results for assorted popular terms. This is highly annoying, to say the least. Despite extensive scanning with Adaware 2007 and AVG (both the free editions), I have failed to find the culprit. After searching the web for the offending URL, I found a reference to 'ptlg.exe' and tried killing it in Window's Task Manager. Bingo! the malware stopped!. Is this all I have to do? Is ptlg.exe a required system file which has been infected? What is the best way to kill this thing dead, once and for all?
I an running a fairly new re-install of Windows XP Pro, and am seriously thinking of just formating and starting again...
If you can help, I would be most grateful!
My log file follows (run AFTER killing ptlg.exe - is this OK?). Thanks in advance.
Graham

AnswerHi Graham
You can read about ptlg.exe from the following website:
http://www.threatexpert.com/report.aspx?uid=ecacd432-54e2-465a-b247-274486dee9a7
As you can see, it is not required and is a security risk. It is also still running on your system (second entry from the bottom). Use the following steps to remove the offender:
Please download Killbox from here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/spyware/KillBox.zip
Unzip to desktop and open killbox.exe. Check the box that says delete on reboot. Highlight the entry below and copy it to the clipboard:
C:\Windows\system32\ptlg.exe
Then in killbox click File>>Paste from clipboard.
Then click the Red X.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click yes to reboot now.
Upon reboot you may receive a Windows error message looking for the file we just deleted. Ignore it and then run HJT (scan only) and place a check mark in the box next to the following item, then click the Fix Checked button:
O23 - Service: ptlg - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\ptlg.exe
Note that the HJT entry may say 'file missing' after it.
You will also need to click Start-Run-type regedit- Enter then navigate to and delete the following Registry Keys:
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\ptlg
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\ptlg\Security
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ptlg
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ptlg\Security
You will also need to change the following key's value:
* [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
From Start Page = "http://www.liepie.com"
To Start Page = "http://www. <--type your desired start page here
Next, please run an online virus scan here using Internet Explorer:
http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/
Post me the results of the scan and also a fresh HJT log, along with an update on how the computer is running.
Brian
