Question
QUESTION: My computer has been running poorly.  I've run a CounterSpy scan, but there are still two suspicious icons on the desktop that can't be removed.  I believe they are infecting the computer and making redirects on IE and giving me numerous pop ups that I never had a couple of days ago before these icons appeared.
One icon shows up as "Help and Support Center".  When I get its properties it shows a target of storageprotector.com/clean...
The other icon "Windows Update" has the same properties.  Whenever I try to uninstall or shred them, they disappear for ten seconds then return.

Please follow the steps below carefully:

Please download ComboFix.exe from:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
and run following these instructions:

1. Disconnect from the internet.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, along with all other programs including your browser.
3. Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

After ComboFix is finished, it will save a log file for you at C:\ComboFix.txt

Now reconnect to the internet and go here:
http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/
Click on this ESET Online Scannner to begin the process.

  * Check the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  * Click Start
  * When asked, allow the activex control to be installed.
  * Click Start
  * Check below options:
        o Remove found threats
        o Scan unwanted applications.
  * Click Scan
  * Wait for the scan to finish
  * When it finishes it will create a log file here: C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt

Attach this logfile to your next message, along with the ComboFix log and a new HJT log.

Can you run Kaspersky WebScanner? (Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer)

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Standard
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Post me any infections listed and the log files from ComboFix and HJT.
