QuestionI recently installed Windows Live One Care on my mother-in-law's computer ,I then ran a full system scan. The program found 9 infected files,it deleted 7 files and quarentined the other 2.After rebooting, once I got online I started getting popups for different {removal tools}.One called Live antivirus even installed itself into the program files as a free evaluation.Windows One Care removes it ,then it shows up again, Ever hear of this?
AnswerHi Fred,
Do you have a firewall program installed, besides the one that comes with Windows XP? Check out ZoneAlarm from:
http://www.download.com/ZoneAlarm-Firewall-Windows-2000-XP-/3000-10435_4-1003988...
Even though you installed Windows Live One Care, using Internet Explorer, go to:
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym
Click the GO button, then under Virus Detection, click Start. You might be told that you need to download and install ActiveX Controls for the scan to work, answer Yes.
Write down exactly anything it finds, then go to:
http://www.symantec.com/search/ and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for removing manually. Make sure that you follow the instructions for removal, step by step, especially the part regarding disabling System Restore.
You/she might want to download Spybot from:
http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html
Check for updates before running a scan.
Hope this helps!
