QUESTION: Hi Brian - Long time no speak...I did want to thank you again for all the help you have provided me over Christmas/NY with my virus....anyways, I seem to have one small virus still....I have my homepage set to www.google.ca, but it keeps changing back to www.msn.com. It does not happen immediately, but anywhere from 1 hour to a day later....it has been going on for a while...

ANSWER: Hi Skott.

I'm sorry you had to come back here for a problem, but I'm happy you entrust me to fix it.  The redirect would be really weird if it was a virus issue. Why would a virus change your homepage to http://www.msn.com?  Usually, it's redirected to some money-making scam site.  Besides, your HJT log file is clean, so we need to look elsewhere.  My money is on one of your security programs.  Either Norton, or ZoneAlarm, has locked your homepage to prevent a browser hijacking.  Check the settings in those programs for a browser lock.  Now if that is not the case, another possibility is a rootkit that is hiding from HJT.  Run the Rootkit Revealer:

Unzip it to it's own folder or to your desktop.
Run RootkitRevealer.exe and scan your system. When the scan is complete click on File, Save, and save the log file. Post that log here.  Also run Blacklight from F-Secure:

Hopefully the problem is simply the browser lock, so you won't need to run these scans.

ANSWER: Hi Skott

I think I found your answer.  In the antivirus portion of Norton Internet Security, in the options page, there is a home page protection setting.  This setting does not work with IE7!  Deselect the protection, then change your home page, then you can re-enable the protection, if you want.  I would just leave the protection off until Symantec fixes the problem.

QUESTION: I can't find this home protection page setting anywhere under options or anywhere else? I tried phoning Norton, but they wanted to charge me $100....my Norton is up to date, but I cannot find this Home protection page under either the Protection Centre or Antivirus tab....???? What am I missing (besides basic computer knowledge?)

1  Start Norton AntiVirus.
(If Norton AntiVirus is part of Norton Internet Security or Norton SystemWorks, then start that program.)

2  Click Options, and then click Norton AntiVirus.

3  Under Internet, click Home Page Protection.

4  Check Turn home page protection on.

5  Check Block all attempts to change my home page.

6  Check Alert me when my home page loads.

7  Exit your browser, and then restart it.
