Question
QUESTION: My pc is infected by malware name " packer.malware.NSAnti.k "...Im using Bit defender 2008 Total security presently and it has detected this malware a lot of times and it says that it cant be deleted but it has block this malware. Now after all scanning was complete, whenever i open my hard drives, it shows an "open with" option. But when i open them with window explorer i can easily access them. i dont know how to solve this problem. The same problem is coming in my laptop as the same malware has also affected it!

Your error is caused by the corruption of your autorun.inf file which was not cleaned by BitDefender.

To correct and solve this error, follow these steps:

1. Run Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del or right click on Taskbar)
2. Stop wscript.exe process if available by highlighting the process name and clicking End Process.
3. Then terminate explorer.exe process.
4. In Task Manager, click on File -> New Task (Run…).
5. Type “cmd” (without quotes) into the Open text box and click OK.
6. Type the following command one by one followed by hitting Enter key:

del c:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a
del d:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a
del e:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a

c, d, e each represents drive letters on Windows system. If there are more drives or partitions available, continue to command by altering to other drive letter. Note that you must also clean the autorun files from USB flash drive or portable hard disk as the external drive may also be infected.
7. In Task Manager, click on File -> New Task (Run…).
8. Type “regedit” (without quotes) into the Open text box and click OK.
9. Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

10. Check if the value name and value data for the key is correct (the value data of userint.exe include the path which may be different than C drive, which is also valid, note also the comma which is also needed):

“Userinit”=”C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,”
If the value is incorrect, modify it to the valid value data.

Your HijackThis log file is fine, so by following the steps above, you will return your computer to normalcy.  I hope I have helped you with this problem.

QUESTION: Thanx for replying. IT helped. There is one more problem,   everytime i rename any file this error comes " if you change the file name extension, the file may become unsuable" ...can u tel me what could be the possible problem for this?

Hi Anubhav

The message you are getting isn't so much an error as it is a warning: Windows is asking if you are certain you want to change the file extension.  According to SmartComputing.com, "There are two ways to handle this situation. If you want Windows to display file extensions, note the extension whenever you rename a file and be sure to type it in. For example, if you rename a file called Old.txt, make sure you type New.txt and not just New. If you don't want to deal with extensions at all, configure Windows to hide them. Double-click My Computer, click Tools, and then click Folder Options. Now select the View tab and scroll down the list until you see an option that says Hide MS-DOS File Extensions For Known File Types (or simply Hide Extensions For Known File Types) and put a check in the box next to that entry. Click Apply and the extensions disappear from all of your files.
