QUESTION: Hi!  I am hoping you can help me... I heard about you and this website from a friend!  Despite all my attempts, I am unable to get rid of a viruses.  I currently use Trend Micro PC-cillin and continually find trojans.  

Other problems I am having are that I keep gettin pop-ups, despite having a pop-up blocker running.  Also, sometimes, you will hear the audio from a pop-up without being able to see one or close one.

I will do my best to help you out here.  Please follow the instructions below carefully and completely.

Please remove Viewpoint from your system, as it is considered minor malware:

1) Right-click on the clock in your taskbar and choose Task Manager
2) Click on the Processes tab and search for VIEWMGR.EXE, if its found, click on it and then click End Task to close it
3) Click on Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs
4) Uninstall any of the following programs associated with Viewpoint

   * Viewpoint Manager
   * Viewpoint Media Player
   * Viewpoint Toolbar

5) Close the Add/Remove Programs and Control Panel
6) Restart your computer

After restarting, please download ComboFix to your desktop from this link:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
Next, please close/exit all programs including any browsers, antivirus, and firewall programs as they may interfere with the running of ComboFix.  Double-click the ComboFix icon on your desktop and follow the prompts.  When the program is finished, it will produce a log report.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Finally, copy and paste the ComboFix log here along with a fresh HJT log.

Hi Chad

You're welcome.  I don't see much running in your log file that you should not have on start-up.  Most of your entries are essential Windows files or security software.  The exception is AOLAcsd.exe which is a small utility that will attempt to reconnect your computer to the internet should it be disconnected for some reason. It saves you from having to manually reconnect.  This process has been known to take up nearly all of your CPU resources at times.   If you find it unnecessary,  you can click Start, Run, type 'msconfig' without the quotes, and look for the service in your start-up programs, then uncheck the box.  As for how many processes is too many, that all depends on your computer.  Newer computer with greater memory and faster CPU's can handle more at start-up without taking a hit in productivity.  Use your task manager (ctrl-alt-del) to check your running processes and how much memory they are using.  If you find some program is slowing the others down, look for a newer version, find a similar but less memory hungry program, or add more RAM memory to your computer.  I hope this helped you out.
