Question
QUESTION: Whenever I scan my system with Bit Defender 2008, It hangs up at System Volume information. I am using Windows XP home edition. I received info from Bitfender support, but I still can't delete a file in System Volume folder called "tracking.txt." I saw that you had some comments for a Kapersky user, so per your suggestion I ran SuperAntiSpyware but not ATF-cleaner (only Vista version at GoGeeks). The bottom line is that nothing works, so I thought I'd send you specific information about my system (dump from HiJackThis) to see what you suggest I try next.

Thanks you in advance,

Gene Cole

ANSWER: Hi Gene

Your log file was broken up by spacing errors, so I will need you to send over another one in a reply here.  Make sure you are copying and pasting from Notepad.

First, to fix your problem, shut off your System Restore:

1. Click Start.
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. On the System Restore tab, click Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on all drives.
Note: If you do not see the System Restore tab, you are not logged on to Windows as an Administrator.
4. Click Apply.
5. When you see the confirmation message, click Yes.
6. Click OK.

Now reboot, then turn it back on by unchecking the Turn off System Restore box.

That should clear any System Volume errors you are getting.  Let me know how this works for you.

QUESTION: YOur recommendation didn't help. The file "tracking.txt" wasn't deleted and I think that is the culprit. I ran HiJackIt again, but turned word wrap off. Hopefully, this gives you the information better than my last try.

Thanks,

Gene

Answer
Hi Gene

The tracking.txt file is a necessary part of Windows and should not be deleted.  It will just replace itself on reboot.  Your log file looks clean except for a few entries that can easily be fixed.  Start HJT and click Scan, then place a check mark next to the following entries and click on the Fix Checked button:

F3 - REG:win.ini: load=
  O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
  O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
  O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe (file missing)
  O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe (file missing)

Close HJT and reboot.  Other than that, I really don't have an answer as to why BitDefender stops at System Volume.  Have you tried asking on the BitDefender Forum?

Good luck
