COMPLAINTS

My Windows XP computer was running a Kaspersky Anti-virus program that somehow just disappeared. Windows informed me that I have a trojan called Backdoor, and my computer has been running kind of slow at times. Also running the RegCure program turned up over a thousand errors that are currently uncorrected. So..., what would you suggest?

ANSWER: Hi John

Leave the registry unchanged until we remove the malware.  Please follow the instructions below:

Please turn off System Restore:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. In the System Properties dialog box, click the System Restore tab.
3. Click to select the Turn off System Restore check box. Or, click to select the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box.
4. Click OK.
5. When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm that you want to turn off System Restore:
You have chosen to turn off System Restore. If you continue, all existing restore points will be deleted, and you will not be able to track or undo changes to your computer.
Do you want to turn off System Restore?
After a few moments, the System Properties dialog box closes.

Please follow the instructions below to run ComboFix:

1. Download this file to your desktop - combofix.exe

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you.
Note:  Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Run a complete system scan with Dr.Web, then post me the results, along with the ComboFix log and a new HijackThis log.

QUESTION: I ran the ComboFix, the log is below this writing.

After that I ran cureit, and that found two batch files it didn't like, A000006.bat and A0000022.bat I deleated the files and rebooted the computer. Following that I ran HiJackThis again. The log of that program is at the end of this writing.

QUESTION: OK, I did the stuff, rebooted, and the fresh HJT log is below. The computer may be a little faster generally and the annoying lag while starting Internet Explorer is gone. No other problems that I am aware of.

Also, before this ends, I wonder what you would regard as a good choice for internet security?

Hi John

You're log file looks clean.  You may now turn back on your System Restore if you have not already done so.  You can uninstall Combofix by clicking Start-Run-then type combofix /u in the box.  Please note the space between the x and the /.  The Dr.Web CureIt.exe can simply be deleted.  Make sure to empty your recycle bin and delete temp files.  You are running AVG, which I do recommend, but you may also consider running a strong third party firewall along side it, such as the free Comodo Firewall.  Read more here:
