QUESTION: Hi
The other day my sister downloaded a virus without realising.
She clicked a link sent from another infected computer saying "Hey, is this really you? :S http://msngalleries.gigacities.net/viewimage.php?= (X)" followed by the email of the contact it is being sent to.
Now everytime i open messenger it sends a link to all my contacts and often crashes my computer.
Ive looked around on the web for help but found nothing that works.
Please please help me.

ANSWER: Hi Martin

MSN and AIM viruses are becoming commonplace now.  I will need to know exactly what we are dealing with here.  Please download TrendMicro HijackThis! from the following link:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe
* Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
* Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
* By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
* Click on Install.
* It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
* Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
* Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
* Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log (no attachments) into a follow-up here.  I will analyze the log and advise you further.

Please download MsnCleaner.zip and Save it to your Desktop:

   * Unzip it to the Desktop.
   * Now reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit Enter.
   * Double-click MsnCleaner.exe to run it.
   * Click the Analyze button.
   * A report will be created once after you finish scan.
   * If it finds an infection, click the Deleted button.
   * Now, please reboot back to normal mode.
   * Please post the contents of C:\MsnCleaner.txt in a reply here along with a fresh HJT scan.

Hi Martin

Please download ComboFix and save to your desktop:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

    Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop
    Close any open browsers.
    Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
    When it's finished it will produce a log.
    Post the contents of the C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
    Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
    That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

After running ComboFix, please download Dr.Web's CureIt from here:

ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe

Run the utility and press the "Start" button in the opened window. Confirm the launch by pressing the "OK" button and wait for the scanning results of the main memory and startup files. Select the Complete scan  and press the "Start scanning" button on the scanner right.

When finished, please post me the ComboFix log located at C:\ComboFix.txt and also a fresh HJT scan log.
