Question
QUESTION: hi Brian
I was having problems with pop ups. I have AOL spyware and have installed spybot. However Aol spyware is still blocking Ares password cracker from accessing my pc.Will i have to format my PC to get rid of Ares completely, i have no idea how to format my PC, will i have to back up all my files and will i have reinstall AOL ??? i have no idea how to go about it.Also when spybot asks if i want to allow or deny access, I'm never to sure what to click on so deny all access to all traffic.

ANSWER: Hi Christine

You are correct in denying access to programs that are suspicious.  It should not be necessary to reformat your PC.  Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up your Task Manager.  Under the Processes tab, end the process "ares.exe".  Close the Task Manager.  Click START-RUN-type regedit.  This opens the registry editor.  Navigate to and delete the following registry entry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run\ares
Close the Registry editor.
Remove the following files:
C:Program Files\ares\ares.exe

This should remove Ares completely, but we should make sure it is gone and see if it has infected anything else.  Please download TrendMicro HijackThis! from the following link:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe
* Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
* Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
* By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
* Click on Install.
* It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
* Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
* Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
* Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log (no attachments) into a follow-up here.  I will analyze it and get back to you with further instructions.

ANSWER: Hi Christine

Please run HJT (scan only this time) and place a check mark in the box next to the following items, then click the Fix Checked button:

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZUzed004YYGB_ZZzer000
  O16 - DPF: {DF1C8E21-4045-4D67-B528-335F1A4F0DE9} - http://es6-scripts.dlv4.com/binaries/egaccess4/egaccess4_1073_em_XP.cab

Close HJT and reboot.  As a suggestion, I would uninstall the Ask Search  Assistant, as it has a dubious history.  See here:
http://www.benedelman.org/spyware/installations/askjeeves-banner/

Other than that, your log looks good.  Let me know if you are still experiencing signs of infection.  If not, you're good to go.

QUESTION: ty so much Brian
just 1 more thing how do i uninsall Ask Search Assistant?
do u mean dont use ask.com ??

Answer
Hi Christine

I did not mean to imply that you not use Ask.com.  My suggestion to remove the Ask Search toolbar (Start-Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs and remove any Ask or FunWeb products) is based on observations and recommendations by independent sources.  For example, read the comments posted on this page:
http://www.searchenginejournal.com/ask-jeeves-responds-to-spyware-accusations/16
and the article here:
http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Security/Ask-Jeeves-Disputes-AntiSpyware-Flaggings/

In any case, because of the controversy with this particular product, I suggested it's removal.  Whether you do so is entirely up to you.  And as far as I know, Ask.com is entirely safe to use as a search engine while browsing the web.  I hope that clears up your questions and I'm glad your computer is running fine again.  Cheers!
