Question
My children opened something on msn,I think it's a virus because ever since then my computer keeps trying to send emails to everyone which are of unpleasant content. some are quite rude, others are about rolex watches etc. Please tell me how to get rid of it? I nave run scans etc but can't find it!

Answer
Hi Ann,

Not knowing which scans you have run try using Internet Explorer, go to:

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym

Click the GO button, then under Virus Detection, click Start. You might be told that you need to download and install ActiveX Controls for the scan to work, answer Yes.

Write down exactly anything it finds, then go to: http://www.symantec.com/search/  and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for removing manually. Make sure that you follow the instructions for removal, step by step, especially the part regarding disabling System Restore.

I would also suggest downloading Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.2 from:

http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html

Check for updates before running the scan.

Do have a firewall program installed? Someone could be using your email address and use it to send spam. Check out Zone Alarm a free program available from:

http://www.download.com/ZoneAlarm-Firewall-Windows-2000-XP-/3000-10435_4-1003988...

It could be a virus or someone is using your address, try doing the above and let me know if anything is found. I would download Zone Alarm first.

Hope this helps!

This happens to be of interest to me as it boggles my mind that people have nothing better to do than to write a virus. Wish these people, the ones who write viruses would put the knowledge to good use instead. My job as a local tech involves removing viruses and/or spyware.
