Question
Hi,
A couple of days ago i suspected a virus attack on my pc and ran the online onecare safety scanner provided by Microsoft. The scan found that my pc was infected wih passama.c and another called VirTool: Win32/Obfuscator.c. While i was able to delete/fix the first virus, i am unable to do so for the second.

I tried using norton, mcafee, eTrust, quickheal, avg and avs anti virus (free trials but with latest updates), but they were unable to find the problem, let alone fix it. I downloaded the windows live onecare anti virus but even that was unable to fix the problem.

Now i have two questions...one, is there really a trojan/virus on my pc now or is the online scanner simply scaring me. and two, if my pc is indeed infected, can u please tell me how can i remove it:(

Hi Arshad

I'll be glad to help you here.  The entry Win32/Obfuscator.c is an Internet Worm.  HJT is not detecting it, probably because it is only activated by an HTML Application file (HTA), which may not have been running during the scan.  Let's try the following:

Please turn off System Restore:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. In the System Properties dialog box, click the System Restore tab.
3. Click to select the Turn off System Restore check box. Or, click to select the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box.
4. Click OK.
5. When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm that you want to turn off System Restore:
You have chosen to turn off System Restore. If you continue, all existing restore points will be deleted, and you will not be able to track or undo changes to your computer.
Do you want to turn off System Restore?
After a few moments, the System Properties dialog box closes.

Next, go to Start then Run and type in the box: "cleanmgr". It will scan your system for files to remove. Make sure the following are checked and then press OK to delete:

  * Temporary Files
  * Temporary Internet Files
  * Recycle Bin

Finally, please download and run Dr.Web CureIt! from this link:

Run a complete system scan with Dr.Web, then post me the results.
