QUESTION: everytime now I turn on my pc i get these desktop icons I foolishly downloaded and can't get rid of them; i get popups ads for virus scans and software and windows warnings. I cannot find the spyware and virus remover I used to have it's gone, and all of them charge, I used to download for free but now it's just a free scan. so How do I get rid of these on a budget -- I mean for free.

I will need to find out exactly what is running before I can help you to fix it.  Please download TrendMicro HijackThis! from the following link:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe
* Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
* Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
* By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
* Click on Install.
* It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
* Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
* Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
* Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log (no attachments) into a follow-up here.

Please download ComboFix to your desktop from here:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

Close all other programs, including any antivirus programs, then double click on the ComboFix icon to run the program.  Please allow the program to run completely (it may take some time), and allow it to reboot your computer.  After restarting, the program will finish up by creating a log report, which I will need you to copy into a follow-up here, along with a fresh HJT log.
