Computer Security & Viruses/smitfraud-c virus???
Expert: Brian Benosky - 5/25/2008
QuestionQUESTION: Hi Brian,
I'm hoping you can help me because my searches at Symantec and elsewhere on the internet have not been helpful. I ran Spybot and it found 3 viruses: "Smitfraud-C.", "Smitfraud-C.gp" and "Zlob.Downloader.vcd". The virus tells me I have a virus on my pc and asks me if I want to download software to remove it. It launches my browser, even if I'm not on the internet, and goes to
http://scan.malwarrier.com/502/18. It then runs on scan on my system (eventhough I'm not on the internet) and lists 4 viruses on my pc and asks me if I want to download the software to remove it. There is a red circle with a white X in my system tray. It also replaced my desktop wallpaper with a bright red screen and some sort of symbol on it. When I told spybot to remove the viruses it removed the wallpaper and temporarily removes the virus. But it comes back and starts the whole process over again. Any help you can provide on removing this virus will be greatly appreciated.
Note: I did not check the box, "keep this question private". My concern is that I'm publishing on AllExperts.com the guts of my PC. If there is a security risk for me doing that, could you please either remove the HiJack portion of this question or keep this question private?

ANSWER: Hi Clark
I assure you that there is no security risk to you in revealing a HJT log. It only shows processes running and does not contain personal or confidential files from your computer. For the following cleaning process, you will need to close Spybot, as the program may interfere with the removal. Please download Combofix to your desktop from here:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
Doubleclick the Combofix icon on your desktop.
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, combofix will reboot the computer and re-open again to gather the necessary information for the log. This may take some time. When done, Combofix will close and a log will open, combofix.txt.
Post the contents of this log in your follow-up here, along with a fresh HJT log.
Brian

QUESTION: I ran ComboFix per your instructions. It looks like the virus is still there. I'm getting antisypware warnings with links for downloads. I ran ComboFix a several times, and it deleted the same 2 files. The first time I ran it, SpyBot warned me there were changes being made to my registry, I said no to a couple of the changes because I thought it might be the virus. I removed SpyBot and ran ComboFix 2 more times which is where I am now. Here is the Hijack report, followed by the ComboFix report...

AnswerHi Clark
I should have warned you to shut down Spybot before running Combofix, as it interferes with the cleanup process. Also, only half your HJT came through. Before posting a new one, please follow the instructions below:
Go to your control panel, under Add/Remove Programs, please uninstall any instances of Viewpoint. Then please download SmitfraudFix.exe from here and save it to your desktop:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/smitfraudfix.php
Next, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following:
1. Restart your computer
2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
5. When you are at the logon prompt, log in as the same user that you had performed the previous steps as.
Double-click on the SmitFraudfix icon that should be residing on your desktop.
Press the number 2 on your keyboard and the press the enter key to choose the option Clean (safe mode recommended).
When Disk Cleanup is finished, you will be presented with an option asking Do you want to clean the registry ? (y/n). At this screen you should press the Y button on your keyboard and then press the enter key.
When this last routine is finished, you will be presented with a red screen stating Computer will reboot now. Close all applications. You should now press the spacebar on your computer. A counter will appear stating that the computer will reboot in 15 seconds. Do not cancel this countdown. Please allow your computer to reboot.
Once the computer has rebooted, you will be presented with a Notepad screen containing a log of all the files removed from your computer. Copy that and a new full HJT log here in a follow-up.
