Computer Security & Viruses/One last time, please
Expert: Brian Benosky - 4/20/2008
QuestionQUESTION: Hi Brian,
I deleted all trojans found by Avast. I used Kaspersky antivirus and found a couple more. I had to turn off system restore because one was hiding there as well. I then deleted everything that was flagged. I would like for you to glance at the HiJackThis log one last time. Thanks.

ANSWER: Hi Greg
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. The log file is clean. Many times there will be residual files leftover from the malware removal. While it is prudent to clean them all, fragments which are not running pose no imminent danger. It's always wise to purge system restore after an infection to lessen the risk of the infection reoccurring. Hope that helps. Cheers!
Brian

QUESTION: Brian,
What if the trojan left an entry in the registry or startup? Is there a way to find it? It was a PSW type named nilage. Will it still be functioning in either case or will my AV,firewall or SpySweeper pick it up if it tries to steal information?
Thanks.
AnswerHi Greg
According to VirusList.com, nilage will search the victim machine either for a window titled 'Lineage Windows Client' or Internet Explorer with a window open to any page of the gamania.com server. Keystrokes entered in these windows will be recorded in a file named c:\gamest1.txt. This file will include saved passwords. The file will then be sent, together with other information such as IP-address, to the remote malicious user. The exact files and registry entries to look for can be found here:
http://www.viruslist.com/en/viruses/encyclopedia?virusid=61056
Alternatively, there is a program called cleannilage.exe, which will detect and remove W32/Nilage trojan completely, from your system. Download the cleannilage.exe and save it in a temporary directory:
http://www.pspl.com/download/cleannilage.exe
Double click on cleannilage.exe to execute it.
In any event, Kaspersky would recognize it if the trojan was running, but check for the leftover files anyway.
