About Lorry
Expertise
I can answer most questions regarding viruses/Trojans and help to remove them.

Experience
This happens to be of interest to me as it boggles my mind that people have nothing better to do than to write a virus. Wish these people, the ones who write viruses would put the knowledge to good use instead. My job as a local tech involves removing viruses and/or spyware.

Computer Security & Viruses - PC infected by virus, key logger, spyware

Expert: Lorry - 5/31/2008

Question
Last week my PC got infected by virus, key logger(i think) and spyware. I was checking porn and "boom" my PC was infected; it rebooted and then my homepage changed and it start getting all these spyware and my PC has slowed. I used Free AVG anti-virus and spyware, but still this porn site infected my PC. What do you expect from free programs :)

Anyway on the same day when my PC got infected (an hour before)i logged into a paid website (you have to pay by credit card and type your username and password) but i logged out before my PC got infected. I'm pretty sure my PC is infected by key logger virus because a warning screen comes up saying "some program that can steal usernames and passwords and give them to their master".

1. Did the virus program steal my credit card details and usernames and passwrds? And if so how can i find out? Those were my dad's and i asked him to get a credit check and he said nothing unusual.

Answer
Hi Shane,

Using Internet Explorer, go to:

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym

Click the GO button, then under Virus Detection, click Start. You might be told that you need to download and install ActiveX Controls for the scan to work, answer Yes.

Write down exactly anything it finds, then go to: http://www.symantec.com/search/  and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for removing manually. Make sure that you follow the instructions for removal, step by step, especially the part regarding disabling System Restore.

Don't give up on AVG or Spybot so fast, like a lot of other free programs, they do a great job - make sure you update it before running a scan. BTW, with Spybot are you using TeaTimer - part of the program? Do you have a firewall program installed, for example like ZoneAlarm?

To play it safe, change your Username(s) and password(s), have your Dad alert the bank to what happened, the site's name, etc..

Hope this helps!
