Question
QUESTION: I was on the internet and also signed into my hotmail. The only site I was on which something starting downloading without my permission was flicker.
Anyway I had navigated away from there and only had a fairly safe site open when my default music player opened up by itself and started playing this really eerie music, like out of a horror movie. There was a womans voice over it saying 'It must have been some kind of student prank. I don't know how it got in there or how on earth we're going to get it out...' I stopped the player and shut everything down because it's quite late at night here and I was alone and totally, totally freaked out!
I have Norton so I scanned and it found some cookies but nothing else. I'm just wondering if you have ever heard of this before, if it was a virus or something else? Maybe my laptop has been possessed?!!

Any info would be appreciated.

ANSWER: Hi Angela

I have no information on that particular message you heard, however, I think we should check your computer for spyware to be on the safe side.  Please download TrendMicro HijackThis! from the following link:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe
* Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
* Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
* By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
* Click on Install.
* It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
* Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
* Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
* Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log (no attachments) into a follow-up here.  I will analyze the log and get back to you with the findings.

Answer
Hi Angela

The log tells me the processes currently running on your computer.  The only problem I can tell is that you have FunWebProduct with it's MyWebSearch installed.  You can read about it here:
http://www.pchell.com/support/mywebsearch.shtml
While it's not terribly malicious, it can lead to more nasties and is a security issue.  To begin removal, go to the page I listed above and follow instructions #1-#4 under the title "How Do I Remove My Web Search?"  After running HJT again at step 4, post me a fresh HJT log here.

Brian
