Question
QUESTION: I was on the internet and also signed into my hotmail. The only site I was on which something starting downloading without my permission was flicker.
Anyway I had navigated away from there and only had a fairly safe site open when my default music player opened up by itself and started playing this really eerie music, like out of a horror movie. There was a womans voice over it saying 'It must have been some kind of student prank. I don't know how it got in there or how on earth we're going to get it out...' I stopped the player and shut everything down because it's quite late at night here and I was alone and totally, totally freaked out!
I have Norton so I scanned and it found some cookies but nothing else. I'm just wondering if you have ever heard of this before, if it was a virus or something else? Maybe my laptop has been possessed?!!

Any info would be appreciated.

ANSWER: Hi Angela

I have no information on that particular message you heard, however, I think we should check your computer for spyware to be on the safe side.  Please download TrendMicro HijackThis! from the following link:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe
* Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
* Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
* By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
* Click on Install.
* It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
* Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
* Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
* Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log (no attachments) into a follow-up here.  I will analyze the log and get back to you with the findings.

ANSWER: Hi Angela

The log tells me the processes currently running on your computer.  The only problem I can tell is that you have FunWebProduct with it's MyWebSearch installed.  You can read about it here:
http://www.pchell.com/support/mywebsearch.shtml
While it's not terribly malicious, it can lead to more nasties and is a security issue.  To begin removal, go to the page I listed above and follow instructions #1-#4 under the title "How Do I Remove My Web Search?"  After running HJT again at step 4, post me a fresh HJT log here.

Brian

QUESTION: I hastely clicked on a removal link on that site and downloaded adaware but uninstalled it and followed your 1..4 steps. I also found another unregistered program in there which was linked to a bit of a dodgey site so I removed that too. So I'm still not too sure that's what caused napster to start playing the scarey music on it's own, but it's good to know that there is nothing sinister on my laptop. Although the girl from 'the ring' may yet crawl out of my screen, I'll be sure to switch it off at night and let you know if this happens!

Thanks very much for your time and help.

Answer
Hi Angela

That girl was too creepy!  And I am happy to help you here.  The MyWebSearch is still showing up as running, along with two unknown files in your temp folder.  So we will need to dig a bit deeper for removal.  You may wish to print out the following.

Please download DrWeb's CureIt to your Desktop from here:

ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/launch.exe

Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with DrWeb-CureIt as follows:

   * Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to start the program. An "Express Scan of your PC" notice will appear.
   * Under "Start the Express Scan Now", Click "OK" to start. This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
   * Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
   * Uncheck "Heuristic analysis"
   * Click OK to close the box
   * Back at the main window, click Local Drive C: (a red dot will show which drives have been chosen)
   * Then click the "Start/Stop Scanning" button (a big green arrow on the right) and the scan will start.
   * When done, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any viruses were found.
   * Click "Yes to all" if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
   * When the scan has finished, look if you can see the icon next to the files found. If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select "Move incurable".
(This will move it to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if it can't be cured)
   * Next, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list.
   * Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
   * Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
   * Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.

Send me the Dr.Web.csv along with a fresh HJT log.

Brian
