Computer Security & Viruses/Malware.Trace infection
Expert: Brian Benosky - 6/18/2008
QuestionQUESTION: Hello. I hope you can help. Yesterday, my problems started when Windows Defender told me I had the Vundo.gen trojan but it couldn't remove it. Soon, my IE & desktop started to jam. I tried Spybot, Spyeraser, Adaware, the Vundo fix tool (none helped) & finally Malawarebytes which did something. Vundo seems to have gone, according to Windows Defender, but I now get sporadic pop-ups whenever I open IE which sometimes jam the system. I've run Malwarebytes a few times which keeps finding something called Malware.Trace (identified in the registry as HKEY LOCAL MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMS Juan) & says it deletes it but I still get the pop-ups, albeit, less frequently & they are easily closed. When I reboot, they come back as before, jamming the system again. Any time I scan with Malwarebytes, it shows it's still there so it's not really deleting it permanently. I've had the blue screen twice today too but thought it might be because I had more than one spyware tool running so I closed Spyeraser. My HJT log is below, if needed. Many thanks, James

ANSWER: Hi James
I will need another HJT scan, as this one is not formatted correctly. After the scan opens in notepad, click Format, then uncheck "Word Wrap". Then copy and paste here.

ANSWER: Hi James
Please download Killbox from here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/spyware/KillBox.zip
Unzip to desktop and open killbox.exe. Check the box that says delete on reboot. Highlight the entry below and copy it to the clipboard:
C:\Windows\system32\stvhpfdy.dll
Then in killbox click File>>Paste from clipboard.
Then click the Red X.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click yes to reboot now.
Upon reboot you may receive a Windows error message looking for the file we just deleted. Ignore it and then run HJT (scan only) and place a check mark in the box next to the following items, then click the Fix Checked button:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
http://www.liepie.com
O2 - BHO: {fd62e1bf-6988-d46b-5fc4-7b67e782f968} - {869f287e-76b7-4cf5-b64d-8896fb1e26df} - C:\Windows\system32\stvhpfdy.dll
Note that the HJT entry may say 'file missing' after it, or may be not be there at all.
You will also need to click Start-Run-type regedit- Enter then navigate to and change the following key's value:
* [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
From Start Page = "
http://www.liepie.com"
To Start Page = "
http://www. <--type your desired start page here
Next, please run an online virus scan here using Internet Explorer:
http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

QUESTION: Hello Bryan
I followed your instructions & at the end, when I run the online scanner, it tells me this:
a variant of Win32/Adware.Virtumonde application (unable to clean - deleted)
c:\Windows\System32\scegincc.dll
a variant of Win32/Adware.Virtumonde application (unable to clean - deleted)
c:\Windows\System32\rmcoicnc.dll
a variant of Win32/Adware.Virtumonde application (unable to clean - deleted)
c:\!KillBox\stvhpfdy.dll
I've did 2 consecutive scans without rebooting, with the second scan showing the 3 files were deleted. When I did a scan immediately after rebooting, it showed these 3 entries were back again.
I'm having no problems at all with IE & Windows Explorer as I was having before so something was fixed there after I followed your instructions.
Below is my latest HJT logfile.
Thanks, James

AnswerHi James
I believe those entries are leftovers that VundoFix is holding on to. Let's clean it up by running HJT (scan only again) and place a check mark in the box next to the following items, then click the Fix Checked button:
O23 - Service: VundoFix Service (VundoFixSvc) - Atribune.org - C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\VundoFixSVC.exe
Restart the computer, check for the following file and delete it using Killbox if present:
C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\VundoFixSVC.exe
Also, you may wish to delete all prior system restore points, as they may contain traces of the infection. Go to the following guide:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial143.html#delete
Scroll about 2/3 the way down the page to 'Disabling System Restore'. Follow the directions for disabling, then enabling it again. This erases all prior restore points.
That should cover it, James. I'm glad the computer is running normally again. If you have further problems or questions, please don't hesitate to come back here. Also, please do leave feedback on this site for me. Thanks and good luck.
Brian
