Computer Security & Viruses/slow as molasses computer - hacker?
Expert: Brian Benosky - 6/17/2008
QuestionFirst, I am computer-retarded, so I apologize for including any superfluous details, as I am very stupid when it comes to these things.
I have an old cheap Tiger computer w/ Windows XP (a new system when we got it) and a few other extra brain equipment to get it to run SimCity. But when I try to get on the internet and use our high priced Optimum Online fast as light service, either I can't get on at all or each page takes 5 minutes to load. My teenage daughter uses it daily for facebook myspace talking chat stuff music etc, and occasionally for school.
But I am trying to rent an empty bedroom to a student and I need to read my emails when I am not at work. So I put up with the slowness. I have Windows NT at work so I know what "slow" means on a p.c.
I finally got on today using my DAUGHTER's little square signon box homepage, not my own which would not access the internet. Once there I was able to slowly find my emails, it took about 1 hr 30 mins to reply and finally get off. I clicked on "shut down computer". And it prompted me that someone else is logged on etc. I thought, I must have not signed myself off. So I said no, don't log off, I went back to myself and there was nothing open, and I got out again and went back and tried again. No it said someone is still logged on etc. Eventually after numerous exits re-enters I just went ahead and Shut Down. And while it was Shutting down, I considered: We have a wireless internet, is someone using my or our homepages to compute for themselves? But I don't know how to check that, and I was pretty sick of sitting at this computer at that point and I waited to get to work to find out.
My daughter has run that http:...trendsecure thing you posted.
Optimum Online techies told me months ago that the problem is our old router. An unscheduled visit from Optimum Online repairpeople told me that squirrels had chewed thru our cord and somehow this was screwing up service for everyone on the block, they fixed it, I was told by my daughter that the problem had been solved but then she repeated (teenagers!) that the computer is still slow.
We do not have Cable TV as we have no money left for that once this high priced internet is paid for. I leave it on in case she decides to use it for school. Plus she seems to need it more than air to breathe due to facebook myspace chatting.

AnswerHi Cathy
I too, am tied to Optimum for my internet. I can certainly sympathize with the high cost and low return. That, and the fact that I have two teenagers, makes paying for 'faster' internet a necessity, not a luxury. Since you don't have cable TV, you may want to look into Verizon DSL as an alternative. It's not as fast (your case notwithstanding), but it is cheaper. In any event, let's try to fix the problems you are having.
The slowness of the internet can certainly be caused by malware (of which you do have some), but also might be caused by an unsecure connection. In other words, someone in the neighborhood may be leeching your wireless internet service. We should make sure that you have a secure connection to your router. Send me the make and model of the router and I'll check the instructions for a secure set-up.
Now for the malware. I need you to click Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, then look for any program with the name Viewpoint (Viewpoint Toolbar, Viewpoint Manager, etc.), and uninstall it. There are a few other toolbars installed that you may wish to uninstall, as well. Having toolbars running at the same time from Yahoo, MSN, AIM, can slowdown the internet to a crawl. The fewer programs running, the better, especially with older machines.
Next step is to download a program called CCleaner from here:
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds/downloading-slim
Install it, then run the program. Click Analyze, then wait for it to check your PC, then click Run Cleaner. This will delete unnecessary files which slows you down, such as temporary files and cookies. Now close the program.
Download the program ComboFix and save to your desktop:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop
Close any open browsers and anti-malware programs.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the contents of the C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.
After running ComboFix, please download Dr.Web's CureIt from here:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe
Run the utility and press the "Start" button in the opened window. Confirm the launch by pressing the "OK" button and wait for the scanning results of the main memory and startup files. Select the Complete scan and press the "Start scanning" button on the scanner right.
When finished, please post me the ComboFix log located at C:\ComboFix.txt and also a fresh HJT scan log, the router info, and an update on how the computer is running.
