Hi,

All of a sudden, a rectangular box appeared on my XP desktop:

                                     WARNING
               Spyware detected on your computer
      Install an antivirus or spyware remover to     
                 to clean your computer

Task manager didn't see it, a reboot didn't remove it. A complete MacAfee scan found one bad file (“Joke Bluescreen c), which it couldn’t completely remove, but I doubt this is the cause of the unwanted box. Rebooting didn’t help.

On the web I found a site that claims to get rid of the unwanted message, but I’m afraid to use it because it may also be malware (perhaps by the same people).

Hi Steve

Please download ComboFix from here to your Desktop:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

* Disable and close any antivirus programs.
* Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
* When finished, it shall produce a log for you.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix’s window while its running. That may cause it to stall.


Next, please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop from here:

http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
      o Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      o Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
* then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Copy and paste that log here, along with the ComboFix log, and a fresh HJT log.
