Question
Hi,
I am running windows xp on a dell desktop computer.  Within the last few days, I can't access the internet.  I have cable modem w/wireless router.  all other wireless devices in the house (including this laptap I'm working on now) work fine.  I have power cycled the modem and router, I have connected directly to the computer, i have run a virus scan of all disks (recommended by the isp i spoke with for hours last night).  Nothing.  The connection icon on the lower right corner says i'm connected.  none of the apps that access the net will work.  any ideas?  thanks.

Hi Dave

It sounds like a software conflict, or possibly an overly zealous firewall.  Try turning off applications one by one, starting with your security programs.  End processes using the Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL) and keep checking for internet after each one.  My guess would be the culprit is in your firewall software.  Check that it is not blocking internet access.  If that doesn't work, let me know and we'll try other troubleshooting steps.
