Question
I want to setup my internet connection  with 2nd desktop in my home without paying for extra service.  What is the best way?  I have read about internet sharing connection through xp and also using a router.  Either route that I go, what are the risks?  Lets say one pc gets a virus, can that virus be transferred to the other pc, or  will both pc's be infected only if files are shared between both pc's?  Also, I know a router provides a firewall, but will using internet connection sharing still use firewalls on both pc's or if 1 firewall is hacked, will both pc's be hacked at same time?

Answer
Hi James,
Well the options are paying for hard wiring to the other puter or getting a wireless router.
If you get a router you will need to set it up for adequate security.
Its not hard to do. You will be making your own network with just your puters.
If anybody tries to access your network, they will have to have the password.
If you are using a software firewall, you will have to allow the routers firewall to get thru.
The spreading of malicious attacks will depend on the protection you are running on each computer.
For example, I use Comcast with its modem. I use a Dlink wireless for 2 lappies to connect. The Desktop of my wifes is hardwired. Each of use use different protection programs.
I use BitDefender, my wife uses Avast and my son uses AVG.
The system works well and is secure.
If access to a network is achieved thru malicious means, each puter on the network can be vulnerable.
Use Bios passwaords and Windows logon passwords on each puter to make it harder if this happens.

Hope this helps.
