Experience This happens to be of interest to me as it boggles my mind that people have nothing better to do than to write a virus. Wish these people, the ones who write viruses would put the knowledge to good use instead. My job as a local tech involves removing viruses and/or spyware.
Question Seems like every few months my internet surfing becomes very slow, especially after I download something. I bring it to a repair shop and they fix it. I know little about computers or software. What software (s) do I need to best protect my computer from becoming very very slow again. I'm not sure the difference between antivirus, firewall, anti spyware etc...

Install a good anti-virus program, keep it up to date and run a virus scan at least once a week. A good, free one is AVG, check it out at:
With Spybot, always check for updates before running a scan.
With Internet Explorer opened, go to Tools, Internet Options, under the General tab, click Delete under Browsing history, in the next window click Delete Files and Delete history.
Defrag. Open My Computer, right click the C Drive, click Properties, under the Tools tab click Defragment Now.
