Computer Security & Viruses - Messenger

Expert: Doug Woodall - 8/7/2008

Question
Dear Doug,

One of my friend told me that sending files with MSN Messenger under the commands in menus is not trustable. The user I sent the file can take control of my pc. Told me that we have to send the file by drag and drop way. I don't think that this is not possible but want to be sure. Could you please inform me about this subject ?

It's version is 8.5.1302.1018

 Best regards

 Ertan Evran

Answer
Hi Ertan,
File infectors are common on instant messengers. You have to be careful who you open files from as you can become infected.
Only open files from trusted sources.
There was a problem with MSN messenger back in 2004 but its fixed now.
Make sure your AntiVirus is adequate and all your MS updates are current.

Hope this helps.
