Computer Security & Viruses/Audio Popups
Expert: Brian Benosky - 9/10/2008
QuestionI have a Dell Inspiron 530 with Windows XP. In the last couple of days, I've started to get audio popups (ads like: "Contratulations, you have won a Laptop" or "You have won a Ninentendo Wii" -- or miscellaneous musical "pings/tones", etc.) This happens whether I am Online, or not. I've repeatedly run Super Anti-Spyware, Spybot, Registry Cleaners, Anti-Virus Scans, etc. -- to no avail. How can I get rid of these audio popups? (While typing this, I also got a screen pop-up ad with no audio. I NEVER used to get any of this, until two days ago.) Below is the Notepad Log File you requested. Would appreciate your help. Alida.

AnswerHi Alida
There is nothing particularly dangerous in your HJT log. While it is possible that malware can hide from the scan, you say that you have run many anti-malware scans and the pop-ups keep happening, so the HJT log may indeed be correct. You may simply need to use a pop-up blocker or adjust your ActiveX settings. I do recommend a blocker for ease of use. Pop-Up Stopper Free Edition blocks pop-up ads in Internet Explorer and Firefox. It can also block Messenger Service and desktop ads. Try it here and let me know if it works:
