Computer Security & Viruses - McAfee Security Center

Expert: Doug Woodall - 9/22/2008

Question
I'm hoping you can help me: I purchased the 3 User Protection package from McAfee in April of this year ( I installed the software myself). The subscription is good for a year. However, when I look in the Security Center, it says that my subscription has expired already. The other part of the confusion is that the Security Center says that I'm fully protected against viruses, spyware, etc.(I noticed that beside each description of the protected feature, there was an x beside it) The icon always appears after I log on to my pc. McAfee scans my pc upon logging on also.
What prompted this inquiry was seeing a message from Internet Explorer that I may have been affected by a virus when I was surfing. It encouraged me to download a free AV program. I was about to do that until I recalled that McAfee should have been taking care of it. The download was in the beginning stages when I x'd out of it. Upon further research, I discovered the subscription crisis. I put in a request via e-mail for customer service support. I received a notification that the inquiry has been set up for a service request and I'm waiting as I type to get help. Would you be able to shed light on all of this? I'm wondering if I really have a virus and would like to know what to do. If not, then why the discrepancy with the subscription date?? Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
Hi Nikki,
That free AV was probably a scam. Even though you stopped the Install, it may still have gotten in.
Have you logged into your account at McAfee?
It will show what your Product status is.
Heres the page for US login.

Have you done a scan with McAfee to check for Viruses?

Let me know.
