Question
Hi Brian,
Your answer to my previous question was very helpful. I used the uninstall tool from the Symantec web site before installing ESET. My questions this time are more just curiosity.
First, the ESET download appears to be successful, have already run a complete scan. However, after watching the preinstall video as recommended, the last few steps did not pop up as shown on the video. They involved something about proxy servers and told you what to do. Didn't see that. Program seems to be working fine. Is there an explanation for that? Couldn't find it in their help.

During the scan I ran after the install, I just sat there and watched it. I saw a lot of stuff fly by that I uninstalled a long time ago, and those programs are not in the list under My Computer. (Such as AOL stuff) My question is: do all programs you have ever had on your computer leave a footprint that can be detected by security software?
Thanks again

Answer
Hi Catherine

I believe that the proxy settings would only need to be accessed if there is a problem connecting to the internet for updates.  If the program is updating fine there is no need for proxy server setting adjustments.
No, not all programs leave traces behind, but a majority of them do indeed leave files on your computer.  This is most likely done for two reasons:  1. In case you wish to reinstall the program, certain things like favorite sites or settings may remain on the computer. 2. Software companies are just too lazy or sloppy in writing uninstall routines.  You could go and delete files and folders manually after uninstalling, but there will also be some traces of the programs in the registry.  Never manually delete things from the registry unless you are sure of what you are doing.  Registry cleaners are also good for cleaning up the leftovers, but sometimes they are overzealous and delete too much and that brings up more problems.  If you have any more questions, Catherine, just ask.

Brian
