Expert: Brian Benosky - 9/29/2008
Question QUESTION: hello...i have a problem with internet connection - often my internet connection will just disconnect - when i reconnect it (sometimes i have to physically unplug the modem and then plug it back in), all is fine except that i cannot open any web pages, any email, nothing....when i attempt to open a web page, it flashes up at the bottom of the page WINDOWS32 SHOCK ERROR and then a little more text (which disappears too fast to read it all) - the only way to then get the web pages email etc to work is to reboot the whole pc, even tho my modem is showing an internet connection has been reestablished - hope you can help..many thanks
ANSWER: Hi Darren
Let's first rule out malware as the culprit. Please download HijackThis to your desktop from here:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe
Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Install" button.
Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.
Choose 'Do a system scan and save a log file'.
Copy the text file which opens in Notepad and paste it in a follow-up here.

Answer Hi Darren
Please accept my apologies for not getting back to you sooner. I have had some issues to deal with which prevented me from responding. Please download ComboFix from here to your Desktop:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
* Disable and close any antivirus programs.
* Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
* When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix’s window while its running. That may cause it to stall.
Next, please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop from here:
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
o Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
o Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
* then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
Copy and paste that log here, along with the ComboFix log, and a fresh HJT log.
Brian
